Lactulose (LACTULOSE syrup) is an oral syrup containing lactulose 0.65 g per 1 ml according to the register, in one pack. Lactulose is a laxative that softens stools and makes passage easier by drawing water into the bowel; it is not absorbed by the body.
Indications
- Treatment of constipation: infrequent bowel movements and hard, dry stools.
How to Use
- Dose: follow the patient leaflet or the pharmacist's instructions.
- Do not give to children under 14 without consulting a doctor.
- It starts acting within two to three days; drink sufficient fluids throughout the day.
Do Not Use In The Following Cases
- Allergy to lactulose or any ingredient.
- Galactosaemia.
- Bowel obstruction other than ordinary constipation, or gastrointestinal perforation or its risk.
- Galactose or fructose intolerance, total lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption.
Warnings & Precautions
- Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use for unexplained abdominal pain, lactose intolerance or diabetes.
- Chronic use at unregulated doses or misuse may cause diarrhoea and electrolyte imbalance.
- Consult a doctor if the condition does not improve after several days or symptoms worsen.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: consult a doctor or pharmacist; may be used when needed.
Common Side Effects
- Most common: diarrhoea. Common: gas, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
- Gas may occur in the first days and usually disappears after a few days.
Storage
Store below 30 degrees Celsius. Keep out of reach of children.
