Indications
- Treatment of megaloblastic anaemia caused by folic acid deficiency.
- Anaemia of nutritional origin and anaemia associated with pregnancy.
How to Use
- Follow the patient leaflet or the pharmacist's instructions.
- For children: follow the patient leaflet and consult a pharmacist.
Do Not Use In The Following Cases
- People who have previously experienced intolerance to folic acid.
Warnings & Precautions
- Folic acid alone is not an appropriate treatment for pernicious anaemia or types of megaloblastic anaemia caused by vitamin B12 deficiency.
- Doses above 0.1 mg daily may mask pernicious anaemia while neurological damage continues; vitamin B12 deficiency must therefore be excluded before use.
- May reduce the effectiveness of the anticonvulsant phenytoin. Folate levels may decrease with anticonvulsants, methotrexate, alcohol, pyrimethamine and nitrofurantoin.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: the body's need for folic acid increases during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and folic acid is excreted in breast milk.
Common Side Effects
- Allergic reactions such as skin rash, itching and bronchospasm occur rarely.
